It's another busy week, with plenty to
report.
In this issue:
-------------------------------------------------------
Eckington Bridge is now closed for repairs for
approximately three weeks. Pedestrian access is being maintained but the 382 bus
will not be running to Pershore.
-------------------------------------------------------
The village photograph taken at the Diamond Jubilee
Celebrations on Sunday 3rd June is now available. The photograph can be viewed
at www.birlingham.org/jubilee,
where you will find details of how to order a copy.
Further photographs of the Jubilee weekend will be
displayed on the website soon.

A reminder that the cricket
match between the local team and a team of NH Jockeys &
Trainers, postponed from June, will take place tonight (Thursday, 26th July).
The match is at Birlingham Cricket Ground, starting at 6.00pm, and the format is
20/20 (each team has 20 overs).
There will be a barbecue and raffle in aid of
the Injured Jockeys Fund. All welcome.
-------------------------------------------------------
There will be a special
celebration for the start of the London Olympic Games this Friday,
27th July, at St James's Church. As part of a national event, the church
bells will be rung for three minutes, starting at 8.12am, and you are invited to
join in. Bring a bell at 8.00am (or use one of the bellringer's handbells) and
ring it "as quickly and loudly as possible". Alternatively, you can take part at
home by ringing your doorbell at the same time as the church
bells.
-------------------------------------------------------
The Birlingham Vintage
& Classic Car Rally, cancelled last week due to bad weather, has been
rescheduled for Friday, 24th August. The rally will be at Birlingham
Cricket Club, starting at the earlier time of 5.30pm (5.00pm if bringing a car).
In addition to vintage and classic cars and motorcycles, there will be a
barbecue, bar, tombola and raffle. Entrance is £2 for adults, children under 16
free.
-------------------------------------------------------
As you will be aware, the Village Hall Committee
have to raise a substantial sum of money to make extensive repairs to Birlingham
Village Hall roof. A large amount of money has already been raised but more is
needed before work can begin. The Parish Council have given £500 to the appeal
this year, along with the proceeds from the New Homes Bonus (£460), and have
pledged a further £1000 for next year (2012/13).
It has been suggested that the Parish Council give
an additional one-off donation of £5000 towards the repairs next year. In
order to do this, the Council would need to increase its share of
the Council Tax by an average of £33 per household (£18 for Band A, £28 for
Band D or £55 for Band H, for example). The idea will be discussed again at the
next Council meeting on 19th September.
At the Parish Council meeting last Wednesday it was
decided to canvass opinion among residents about this proposal and we would be
very pleased to hear from you. Please write to info@birlingham.org with your
views.
