6. Village Garden Party
Thanks
Adrianne Woodward
writes:
The Village Garden Party, hosted by Walter and Alison Clode, was
a great success. The rain held off and 75 guests, complete with name tags,
mingled, got to know each other and enjoyed the afternoon tea provided. June
Barke was presented with a basket of toiletries as the winner of the hat
competition.
Generous donations totalling over £1000 were made to St
James’. Many thanks again to all of the
helpers.

7. Flower & Produce Show
Thanks
Caryl Mills
writes:
The Committee of the Birlingham Flower & Produce Show would
like to thank the Cricket Club for hosting the Show this year. Thanks also go to
everyone who helped set up and take down the marquees and tables; the judges and
stall holders; and to all the entrants who made the Show such a great
event.
Please put Saturday 5th September 2020 in the diary now so you
don’t miss next year’s
Show.

8. Bystander Archives on the Village
Website
The eighth edition of the
Birlingham Bystander, published in Winter 1985, is now available on the
website.
The issue, from 34 years ago, includes complaints about mud on
the roads and lorries shaking the foundations – a third of a century on, not
much has changed. A 30mph speed limit was suggested.
The Parish Council
had planted 70 trees the previous year (it would be interesting to know where)
and were considering a plan to make numbers 7 and 8 The Row into a single house.
The Council was also taking the first tentative steps towards recycling with a
scheme to put a skip in the village ‘to save waste paper’.
A diverse
range of articles cover the life of Miss Duke, a polar survey ship, the ‘Defford
squadron’ and growing apples. Photographs of the bell ringers feature faces that
will be familiar to many and among the welcomes were John, Daphne and Richard
Hill.
Issue 9 of the Bystander can be viewed at www.birlingham.org/village/bystander.
